Tubular Inspection

Eddy Current (EC)

Dacon offers all conventional examination techniques
  • Ultrasonic Testing
  • Penetrant Testing
  • Magnetic Testing
  • Eddy Current Testing
  • Radiographic Testing
  • Visual Testing
  • Helium Leak detection
  • Paint Inspection (NACE)
  • Weld Inspection (CSWIP)

One of Dacon's specialties is inspection of heat exchanger tubes. Dacon offers a complete package of tube inspection techniques. Dacon has the right solution for almost every possible tube that can be found in boilers, condensers, air fin coolers or other heat exchangers. For every specific tube and situation the suitable technique or combination of techniques can be chosen...

EC offers inspection in non-carbon content (non-ferrous) tubes, including non-ferrous finned tubes. Local defects as well as overall wall-loss can be detected and quantified. EC can detect both internal and external defects and can distinguish between them. Cracks can be detected depending on their size and orientation. Normally only a basic cleaning of the tubes is sufficient. EC is notably the fastest of the available tools. Approximately 450 tubes, with a standard 6 meter length, can be done on a first inspection day. Speed can go up to as many as 700 tubes per day on additional days of inspection...

Remote Field Technique
(RFT)

Partial Saturation Eddy Current (PSEC) IRIS

As EC cannot be used in ferrous tubes, another technique should be applied. One of the commonly used techniques is the Remote Field Technique. This technique is very suitable for detection and quantification of overall wall-loss. Local defects can be detected and quantified provided that they have some volume (diameter pit >5 mm). RFT can detect both in- and external defects but it is not possible to distinguish between them. Defects under or close to the tube sheet are hard or not possible to detect. Only a basic cleaning of the tubes will be sufficient. RFT is slightly slower than EC. Approximately 300 tubes, with a standard 6 meter length, can be done on a first inspection day. Speed can go up to as many as 450 tubes on additional inspection days...

When small defects (diameter pit < 5 mm) are expected to be found in ferrous tubes the sensitivity of RFT might not be sufficient. In this case PSEC should be applied. PSEC is also very suitable to inspect finned ferrous tubes. PSEC is a technique whereby a changeable magnetic field is used to partly cancel out the magnetic properties of the ferrous material. The technique is very suitable for detection and quantification of local defects like pitting. PSEC can detect, and distinguish between, internal and external defects. It is also possible to detect overall wall-loss. To ensure reliability and sensitivity during an examination the maximum possible probe size shall be used. Therefore the tubes have to be thoroughly cleaned in order to allow the probe to pass through the tube. Approximately the same amount of tubes can be examined in one inspection day as with RFT...

IRIS is an Internal Rotating Inspection System with which the remaining wall thickness of tubes can be measured. IRIS can be applied on both ferrous and non-ferrous tube materials. IRIS is more accurate than the other tube inspection techniques and it has the advantage of presenting information about the geometry of the defect. Local defects and wall-loss on the inside as well as on the outside of a tube can be accurately measured. Defects under support plates can be easily detected and quantified without any disturbance of the signal. Biggest drawbacks of IRIS are the inspection speed and the necessity for the tubes to be very clean. Approximately 70 tubes, with a standard 6 meter length, can be done on a first inspection day. Speed can go up to as many as 100 tubes on additional inspection days. The thorough cleaning and the low inspection speed will cause high inspection cost for IRIS. Therefore IRIS will often be used as a verification tool in combination with one of the other techniques...

Remote Visual Inspection (RVI)
In Line Inspection
(Pipeline Inspection)

Advanced NDT

RVI can be used to visually inspect every possible tube. RVI doesn't provide an y information about defect depth. But it can be useful to obtain information about defect geometry and the possibly present degradation mechanisms in a tube. Defects can be photographed and the image of the whole tube can be video taped. RVI is mainly used as a back up tool to verify the results of the other techniques...

Dacon provides intelligent PIGing services for the inspection of gas and oil pipelines. The intelligent PIG, which stands for Pipe Inspection Gauge, can be used for inspection of very long pipelines with the greatest possible accuracy. The PIG works on the principles of the IRIS ultrasonic internal tube inspection system and gives information about depth, geometry and location of defects in the pipeline. The IRISpig can be battery operated without any cables attached...
